FELTUS OVALTON & SARAH JESSICA PARKER

…are not an item according to a source close to both; however they are very good friends.

I am going to make a shameful admission. Rather than plunge headlong into the mystical and chaotic world that will become “Feltus Ovalton and the Crystal Knucklebone”. I am wasting time. And I have been wasting it for close on four weeks now. Ohh, that makes me feel bad! For some reason I can’t get back into the swing of it all. I could blame the baby’s teething, lack of sleep, my son’s innovative adventures at school, the fact that my editor hasn’t gotten back to me on the other book yet, but that’s not really it. Perhaps my mojo is just not working. I’m following the same routine. Hike in the morning with the Lucy factor (LF), come back, make a mug of coffee and then plop myself down in front of the lap top, while the LF rolls around on the floor at my feet straining to get up on all fours and occasionally having to be picked up when she smushes her nose against the carpet. But I am not following these simple procedures (and incidentally neither is the LF lately but I cannot in good conscience blame her- it’s all me). I cannot make myself apply the seat of my pants to the seat of my chair- as I am forever telling my students, instead I am sitting down in front of the VCR and watching the saucy vixens of Sex and the City and all their fantastic escapades. Maybe when your life is dedicated to writing fantasy you need another kind of fantasy to satisfy those escapist tendencies. I don’t know. What I do know is that I am sitting here, chewing on a handful of red vines licorice and wondering how to wrap this blog up so I can find out if Carrie is going to dump Aidan again.
Ok. Just as I wrote that last line, the power went out. My computer kind of fizzled, I wondered fleetingly if I had backed up recently, and then the screen went blank. The lights went out, the refrigerator stopped its busy drone, my washing cycle halted.
It’s a sign. Absolutely. My laptop- where I do all my serious writing- has a battery so therefore it is still usable in a power outage. I could sit here in bad light with a book or some knitting, bemoaning the loss of my television, or I could get off my behind and finally get that first chapter of the new Feltus down.
So the question is: just how many excuses can I come up with to avoid doing what I love best?
(Incidentally, obviously the power is back on since I was able to finish the blog. In the hour or so that I felt like I was living in a prehistoric cabin in the woods, I managed to write a page- a pretty strong page- of Feltus, so I guess it’s back to the grind.)

  1. So, is it just me, or are you a powerhouse? You’re writing books while raising two children? I only have one child, and I barely find time to create a blog, so I’m pretty amazed that you’re writing a blog…and a book! You kick ass!

  2. April, thanks for the plug. I’ve been very lazy recently. Lucy had croup- something for Sonnet to avoid definitely. I’m hoping to blog tomorrow and I really do need to put my head down and get on with Feltus 3.
‘Tis the season to lounge and enjoy a glass of wine however.
    xxx
